Symphony for Chamber Orchestra by Scottish composer Julian Wagstaff

Wagstaff - Symphony for Chamber Orchestra (2005)

You can listen to MP3 files of the Development and Scherzo sections of this work (recorded live at the first performance) by clicking on the Play buttons below:

This is a single-movement symphony, of 25 minutes in duration, and is scored for chamber orchestra with piano, timpani and two percussionists. It was given its first performance on November 12th, 2005, at a most memorable and well-attended concert given by the Edinburgh University Chamber Orchestra, under the baton of Mr. Michael Bawtree (excerpts above). You can click here to read the programme note from that performance.

The work is in six continuous sections and is essentially about tonalities; how different keys can co-exist, interact, dissolve and cohere. Structurally, it owes something to the symphonies of the American composer Roy Harris.
